Sadness: danah can’t come to Webstock

Webstockers, we are sad. This morning we received news that danah boyd will now be unable to come to Webstock ’11 (you can read about it here). We know you’ll be disappointed. We’re so sorry.

Let’s all send danah healing vibes to assist her in the speediest recovery ever. And stay tuned for more from us as to her replacement….

Ch-ch-ch-changes

So we have some good news and some bad news.

Let’s start with the bad. It’s with sadness we announce that the lovely Mathew Patterson of Campaign Monitor will now be unable to speak at Webstock 2011. Sorry Webstockers. 🙁

It is however with much gladness we announce the addition of the mighty David Recordon of Facebook to our lineup. David spoke at Webstock ’09 and will return to talk about Facebook’s use of HTML5. Suffice to say, we:
like

The passing of Denis Dutton

We were deeply saddened to hear yesterday that Denis Dutton, founder and editor of Arts and Letters Daily and professor of philosophy at the University of Canterbury, had passed away.

We’re honoured to have had Denis speak at our Webstock Mini in September, where he gave the audience a sneak peak of this highly acclaimed TED talk entitled A Darwinian theory of beauty, which centered on how evolutionary theory can be applied to our appreciation of art. This remarkable, thought-provoking talk can be viewed below, or at the TED site:

Denis left a real impression on us here at Webstockville – he was a warm, lovely man – a true gentlemen, and an absolute pleasure to deal with. We feel very privileged to have met him, and a sense of great loss at his passing.

Our thoughts are with the Dutton family.
